  World Scholar's Cup(WSC)

With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, many Chinese students (K-12 stage) studying abroad have transferred back to China. Many parents have chosen Chinese international schools, hoping this will ease their child’s transition into a new learning environment. Beijing Royal School normally accepts students who transfer back to China from abroad every year, and we have compiled several cases here, hoping that reading about their transfer experiences can provide some reference to our parents.

In 2018, Longjiu Meiyuan transferred to BRS’s senior high school from an American high school due to job assignments for her family. She enrolled in the AP curriculum at BRS and found as many as 31 AP courses offered by BRS, with learning methods and environments at BRS being very similar to the U.S. campus atmosphere where she had studied.

Having loved painting since childhood, Longjiu Meiyuan chose the 2D AP design course at BRS and decided college application for design as her major. In addition to her regular academic studies, she was also encouraged to explore other areas of interest to further her personal development. She campaigned for the Deputy Minister of the Arts Department of the Student Union and participated in the school’s Women's Basketball Team and Hosting Class Club.

In addition to the AP courses Longjiu Meiyuan selected, also available were BRS’s wide range of international curriculum systems, including IB courses, A-Level courses, GAC courses, the OSSD Program and the BRFLS-Spain Program (Royalespañol). Having all of these curriculum systems available ensures that students transferring from different countries to China maintain continuity in their curriculum. Furthermore, BRS campus has been fully licensed as the testing and assessment center for a variety of international assessment programs including AP, TOEFL, IELTS and DELE. On-campus testing provides our students with the advantages of professional examination administration services as well as convenience and proximity.

Whereas the overseas students generally have good English proficiency but relatively weak Chinese and mathematics ability, the BRS Chinese teachers and foreign teachers work together, combining their strengths, in order to teach according to the students’ aptitudes. This not only ensures a smooth transition into the curriculum for each student but also helps each student give full play to his or her strengths, making up for any shortcomings that might fall into play.

BRS grade 11 student Niu Yimei transferred to BRS from Jamaica in 2017 and met with quite a tough challenge when she entered into a different curriculum system upon her arrival here. With the help of her BRS teacher, her math performance and Chinese proficiency greatly improved; and the BRS psychology teacher also provided Niu Yimei with counseling to sooth her anxiety caused by the transfer.

Her interest in stage performances and music also helped Yimei quickly adapt to the new environment. She joined the school's Shakespeare Drama Club and Orchestra Club and dazzled the audience on the stage while performing with other club members in the English drama "Hamlet".

Next, we also have Marko who transferred into BRS from Bosnia and Herzegovina when he was in grade 10 and has been a BRS student since then. Thanks to the guidance of BRS coach Upashna Rai Simandan, Marko first came into contact with the World Scholar's Cup (WSC) and expanded his world through his experiences with the WSC.

During August 15-20, 2019 Marko and BRS WSC team members participated in a series of academic challenges at the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round held in Sydney. With an outstanding performance, Marko won the Silver Medal in writing; and the BRS team won many other awards and also qualified for the Tournament of Champions which was held at Yale University.

BRS remains dedicated to offering our students a comprehensive curriculum system, enriched with international-level opportunities and designed to match students with their ideal university. Beginning with grade 10 for each BRS student, our comprehensive college counseling and numerous college-readiness courses provide all they need to successfully navigate through every phase of the college planning process.

It is because of the current epidemic that some parents are choosing to bring their children who are studying abroad back to China, but some of these students may return to study abroad again in the future. It’s good to know that wherever BRS students go abroad to study, the transcripts of Beijing Royal School are legally valid and recognized by all U.K. and U.S. universities. So, if students return to an overseas country again in the future, BRS’s Academic Affairs Office will issue academic proof, such as a “BRS Transcript”, for each student to help them successfully apply and transfer to foreign schools.
