The Last Supper
by Leonardo da Vinci
Jenny Zhu G12 Kappa
The Last Supper was created by Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci, based on the last supper of Jesus and the Twelve Apostles in the Bible. In the picture, the characters' fright, anger, doubt, and expression, as well as gestures, eyes and behavior, are exquisitely portrayed.

Vengeance is Sworn
by Francesco Hayez
Lisa Pan G12 Theta
The work was named as Vengeance is Sworn, it was made by 19th-century Italian romantic painter Francesco Hayez. He finished it in 1851 and put it into a triptych called Love and Revenge. Maria, the protagonist on the left, is shocked by what Rachele, the protagonist on the left, is telling her. Rachele holds a note explaining to Maria how her lover has been unfaithful to her, and Rachele suggests Maria to denounce him to the State inquisitors for revenge.
A note structures the narrative drama of the painting, the unfaithful beloved. Maria touches Rachele’s hand as if to push it away, while Rachele clutches Maria’s shoulder, completing a circuit between the women that calls into question the centrality of the missing third party. The black masks Maria and Rachele wear, called Moretta, were popular in eighteenth-century Venice as a means of flirting. Masking and unmasking shift the drama from the realm of the quotidian into theater, implicitly problematizing the erotic intrigue as a performance. The true feelings of the actors, submerged beneath a set of scripted gestures and historicizing costumes, remain a mystery.
I decided to play both roles myself and express hatred through makeup and editing of the light. I matched similar dresses, replaced the background with the stairs in my neighborhood and part of the painting at home.
So, what do you think of my work, or is there any other understanding of this painting?

Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen
Painting a Portrait of His Wife
by Dirck Jacobsz
Charlotte Chen G12 Kappa
An artist stands before his easel, painting a portrait. He looks out, presumably at the woman whose likeness he is painting. Yet on further consideration it becomes apparent that both the painter and the painted gaze out, but at whom? Who was originally intended to view this painting? Dirck Jacobsz here depicted his deceased father, Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen (about 1472-1533), also a painter. The painting within the painting shows Jacobsz’s mother, who died some years after her husband, possibly around the time this panel was painted. This unusual double portrait seems to be a kind of personal memorial by the son, who would have been positioned before the panel as painter, viewer, and object of his parents’ “attention.” The picture may also have served a more public function, since it possibly was installed above the couples’ grave.
In this painting, a person plays two roles at the same time. I use Photoshop to integrate three separate photos of man, woman, background and frame into one picture. It is not easy to cut characters from one picture and put them on another, because the frame needs to be wiped off a little with an eraser, and attention should be paid to hair and other details. Finally, adjust my light and shadow to finish the painting.

Garcon a la Pipe
by Pablo Picasso
Krista Zhang G12 Delta
Garcon a la Pipe was produced in Paris shortly after Picasso had moved into the district of Montmartre. Picasso painted this portrait of a Parisian boy wearing a wreath of flowers and holding a pipe in 1905, during his so-called Rose period.
It is seen as one of the most significant works from the early development of his career and shows how early Picasso moved into contemporary styles having initially studied classical art techniques.
Picasso touched on the beauty of youth in this painting which was out of character for his portraits of around this time. Cheerful ochre and pink palette of the background and the flowers in combination with the boy’s contemplative expression miraculously express both femininity and masculinity of a teenage model. Elements of the pose are also inconclusive as to his thoughts behind the work, whilst the left arm is placed in an uncomfortable, unnatural position.
Painted only two years before the groundbreaking Cubist work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Garcon a la Pipe already shows early signs of Picasso’s aspiration to step away from the literary depiction and towards more abstract stylization using flat surfaces.

The Scream
by Edvard Munch
Rex Geng, Austin Zeng, Chad Gu G12 Eta
We decide to cosplay The Scream, from Edvard Munch. This painting is a great representation of repression and stress. Today's society places huge amount of pressure on people in their daily life. In our project, we recreated the classic painting by performing the theme of the protagonist screaming while adding more diverse and modern story lines. We will produce a total number of 4 themes, which are respectively caused by bank loans and debt collection from usury; gangsters' threaten towards Asian people; close deadlines and poor grades, and horror to be shot. After the initial shooting, we use photoshop software to distort the expressions on characters’ face and background environment in order to mimic the original.
