English Version
It was 2012.
The youngest teacher on board, Kathy, entered Suzhou High School just like her colleagues did years ago. In 2012, she was admitted into the first Kuang Yaming Experimental Class for Gifted/Talented Students. In two years, all 18 students in this class would be studying at Kuang Yaming Honors School of Nanjing University, with a curriculum focusing on all fields of natural sciences. In a sense, Kathy and her peers left the Gao Kao (College Entrance Examination) track early, but they were not outsiders on this campus. Instead, they strived and enjoyed school life just like the others, in school clubs, on the sports field, on the stage, and in the wider world. Back then, Kathy was trying to figure out what learning and studying meant.
It was 2012.
Jason was 18 and studying in Pearson College UWC on full scholarship as an IB student. Now he is referred to as "Old Wu" in the office, not because of his age, but for his composed quality. Back then, the adjustment from Suzhou High School, where he is familiar with, to IB studies abroad was not easy. He was anxious back then. The IB workload was not strenuous but it was a new experience, with constant interdisciplinary actions and self-reflection, combined with a diverse range of extracurricular activities. Never was he confused though: Suzhou High School taught him that doing the best he could would lead to the best outcomes. For him, the IB path was trying but rewarding.
It was 2012.
Sean got his Bachelor's Degree at University of Wisconsin-Madison. There, he met two people who have had the greatest influence on his research career, his mentor and his Principal Investigator. Sean's application for his doctoral degree was not smooth. His boss broke the tradition of not accepting post-grad applications from its own undergraduates and took him, therefore, he was able to pursue further education on full scholarship. Along with his peer who was also a Suzhou High School alumnus, he published 6 papers within a mere two-year range, beacuse both of them knew that some opportunities may only come once in a lifetime so they strived whenever they could. This life creed is what Suzhou High School taught them and what they would incorporate throughout their life. 2012 was also the year he first stood behind a podium as a teacher. Little did he know that he would hold that piece of chalk for ten years, and more is yet to come.
It was 2012.
When Kathy, Jason and Sean were still dealing with adjustments in life, Ben has already decided his career for the next ten years. From Suzhou High School to the School of Life Sciences in Nanjing University, from completing the Bachelor of Science to pursuing the Ph.D. degree in Integrated Biomedical Sciences at University of South Carolina on full assitantship, Ben has always been a "straight-A" student. Back in 2010 at University of South Carolina, Ben had a long discussion with his mentor on his career choice and finally decided to withdraw from the cutting edge of biomedical research while still keeping a lifelong passion for science. In the same year, Ben returned to China, joined New Oriental Vision Overseas (Suzhou), and broke new ground in high-end college application counselling in Suzhou. In 2012, Ben started his own company and during the next decade grew to be a well-reputed institution dedicated to help students pursue education opportunities worldwide. Now, he is already one of, if not the most, renowned college counselors in Suzhou. No matter what he chooses as career, he can unfailingly become the first-rate as a professional.
It was 2021.
The four former students of Suzhou High School met on campus and they would soon find what Suzhou High School had instilled in all of them, which is also how Suzhou High School has influenced generations of students.
Kathy's first encounter with Shakespeare when playing Gertrude at the Shakespeare Festival in Suzhou High School has inspired inside of her a passion for literature and performance. When she got into Nanjing University, she followed her heart and switched major to English. Suzhou High School gave her the courage to challenge oneself. After graduation, Kathy joined Suzhou High School - Suzhou Bay Campus as an English teacher, hoping to teach students in a way she has been taught back in high school. She joined Suzhou High School - International Division's founding team in 2021.
After Kathy, Jason also came back to his high school and joined the International Division. His studying and working experience in Canada and Europe gave him chances to contemplate on how Suzhou High School had shaped him and what the IBDP had instilled in him. Jason works at SZZX-ID as a Math teacher as well as a CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) coordinator. He sets his mind to encouraging students to establish oneself in this society through this IB core course.
Sean said farewell to research field in 2016 and focused on teaching Chemistry, Biology and training students in natural sciences competitions in the USA. Since his high school years, Sean was always aware that he was not a "nerdy" student. When studying for his Ph.D degree, he provided safety training to nearly 7000 Chinese Americans in Pittsburgh. During his first year back to China, Sean founded an American football team in Suzhou. He can work excellently with himself, but he prefers to be a community leader and motivate people in all ways possible. In 2021, Sean joined SZZX-ID, in hope of cultivating leadership in all his students.
Having devoted dozens of years into college couseling and helped thousands of students accomplished their dreams, Ben started to yearn for something more. He had always respected education for its intrinsic aims and values. After a not-so-hard decision-making process, Ben chose to be the college counselor and Biology teacher of SZZX-ID. The three years at Suzhou High School taught Ben what perseverance is and cultivated him to be an outstanding researcher. And now, what he pursues, more than anything, is to assist more students to stand on the shoulders of giants for a more holistic view, and surely, to secure more offers from MSHYP (MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton.)
The four of them have spent a total amount of ten years on campus, so can they draw a conclusion on how Suzhou High School has influenced its students? Kathy learned to be courageous and rebellious, and how to stay motivated. Jason learned concentration and devotion. "Study with an open mind, and grow up to be an all-round man." Sean learned to be a sharer and a leader and to devote to the better good of the community and even the whole society. Ben learned to respect individuals for their differences and infinite possibilities. Suzhou High School taught them so much, and the only thing that it "forgets" to let them know is how to "climb up" through involution.
Here is general introduction of the four young teachers.
