Ancient Origins of Halloween

Halloween’s origin date back to the ancient Celtic festival of  Samhain  (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mainly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.

This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and also the beginning of the dark, cold winter. A time of year that was often associated with the death of the human. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, and this tradition was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

ActivitiesThe tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints in the eighth century. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day that included activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating snacks.

Dressing upThe tradition of Halloween costumes originated from the Celts. They lit huge bonfires and celebrated Samhain by dressing up in elaborate animal skins and heads to disguise themselves as spirits and demons so that the real ones couldn't distinguish them as human beings. Their ceremonies consisted of dancing, telling stories, and reading fortunes. The tradition then made its way to America and transformed into another form. On Halloween, it was believed that the spirits and ghosts of the dead came back to roam the earth. People then wore masks and "dressed up" in an outfit to look like one of the spirits to avoid being recognized as one the living people.

The Halloween in China

Halloween entered China mainly through two primary approaches:foreign teachers and Western foreigners.

Foreign teachers in China might have a Halloween party for their students and a lesson about Halloween in their country. Some Chinese children hear about Halloween and might make decorations and get Halloween candy. Previously, few Chinese do much about Halloween unless they have foreign friends.

Halloween in China has recently been a party day in foreigner-oriented bars and restaurants where many foreigners live, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The bars and restaurants frequented by foreigners will often decorate for the occasion with pictures of black cats, ghosts, monsters, and Halloween lanterns, and there might be masquerading parties.

The two big theme parks in Hong Kong, Ocean Park and Disneyland have Halloween-related activities. Masquerades, haunted houses, movies, and costumed people could frighten you.

In Shanghai, an old building built in 1933 by the British called 1933 Shanghai was a former slaughterhouse and is now a chic office building that holds a Halloween event every year with adult-rated masquerade parties.

As a festival holiday in western culture, the international track of Houde Academy won’t miss the chance to celebrate. Last year, the international track also successfully held a Halloween event, which students and teachers widely enjoyed. With the help of teachers, the student union proposes exciting events like the Scavenger hunt, playing board games, chess, and dinner party. Some of our teachers and classmates had great Halloween costumes and makeup. Hence, we encouraged all the teachers and students to go further this year! The most popular scavenger hunt activities are seeking clues, hiding in the corner of campus, and puzzle riddles. Through these events, the friendship between classmates strengthened a lot. Also, the teacher bonded with students, and our peers in the student union learned to cooperate. This year we will continue our tradition, delighting everyone with our elaborately designed activities on that night. The detailed arrangements are listed below.

Additionally, the charity and coffee clubs would have a table at the event for social purposes.
