01 G12 Photography Exhibition
Mr. Phil Dust
Translated by Mr. Ming Liu
Seniors Andy Jeon and Owen Chen are some of our most talented artists. They currently have an exhibition on display, entitled ‘On The Road; Street Photography.’ The display remained up in our exhibition corridor, through the middle of October, for all to appreciate.
Andy’s side of the exhibition is subtitled ‘Crumbling’ and was shot over a period of two years following Andy’s creative emotions, partnered with the dynamics of his shots, on the themes of instability, incompleteness and decay.
Andy Jeon
Owen, conversely, followed his instincts to capture scenes around Guangzhou subtitled ‘Enclosure’, where he captures monochromatic images of people and the tension between them and their enclosed spaces, always highlighting new and undiscovered areas of our fabulous city.
Both these grade 12 students have presented their ideas and artistic interpretation to their peers and staff.
02 HOSA Field Trip
G10 Helen Jin
On October 9, 2022, the HOSA Club visited the Human Body Science Museum of the Southern Medical University to celebrate the fourth World Anatomy Day. Over twenty students and their parents participated in the event, ready to explore the mysteries of the human body.
The Human Body Science Museum of the Southern Medical University is one of the largest life science museums in China. During the visit, we had an opportunity to see the human vessel models displayed via the digital anatomy technology and chat with the "digital human" to find out more about the human body structure.
Dr. Bi Zhenyu from the Human Anatomy Department, Dr. Mo Yuanxi from the Popular Science Education Association and seven staff volunteers did an intriguing workshop to help us better understand our body and disease prevention. Their sharing inspired us to look further into medical development and think about the meaning of life.
I knew many people—through the specimens and stories—during the tour. From diseased organs to dead fetuses, death and tragedy are happening every day. The specimens and stories made us realize how important health is: good health is invaluable, and unhealthy lifestyles should be overcome.
The field trip to the Human Body Science Museum of the Southern Medical University was very meaningful. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the staff members who put together the well-arranged tour and workshop for us. We look forward to our next field trip!
03 Prek 2's Visit to HOS Office
Ms. Courtney Watson
Translated by Ms. Cora Lin
Our lovely Pre-K2 students have been inquiring about the topic of community. They have learned about their direct community at home, their family. Now they are learning about their school community at BASIS. They learned by taking different tours to different parts of our campus. Of course, we had to start our school tour from the top, and visit our Head of School, Dr. Smeltzer in her office.
The students first talked about who Dr. Smeltzer was before visiting, the Head of School. When they were talking about her, they thought of a few questions to ask her:
Dr. Smeltzer:
Question 1: Why are you so tall? Dr. Smeltzer’s Answer: Because I am old and I eat my vegetables.
Question 2: What do you do all day? (Many of the students thought she played)
Dr. Smeltzer’s Answer: I have 3 important jobs. The first is to make sure you are all safe. The second is to make sure you are learning. The third is to make sure you are happy.
They were surprised by her responses, and really enjoyed visiting her.
Dr. Smeltzer did ask them for one favor before the students left: if they ever see her walking around our campus, wave to her and say “Hello, Dr. Smeltzer.”
Dr. Smeltzer!”

05 Grade 9 Literature and Composition Honors English
Mr. Simon Ainsley
Translated by Ms. Bonnie Sun and Ms. Vanessa Huang
On Thursday 13th October, my Grade 9 classes began the first in a series of ‘Socratic Discussions’ where the students debate key themes and plot structures from the texts they are studying. At present, we are reading and analyzing ‘The Joy Luck Club’ – a multi-layered novel and a great example of modern ‘embedded literature’ about the relationships between Chinese-American daughters and their Chinese mothers.
The plot dips back and forward in time from 1919 in China up to 1989 in San Francisco and features seven different narrators.
The idea of a Socratic discussion is for the students to gain confidence in speaking freely and openly about the text and discussing it with each other whilst the teacher acts as a facilitator for the debate.
By preparing for the discussion through research and having notes and quotes ready from the text and wider sources, the students gain a greater understanding of the novel and literature at large.
Even though this was the students’ first Socratic discussion with me, they impressed me with their preparatory research and the way they were able to build it into the discussion to justify their points (a key skill in G9 Hons Lit and essential for AP Lit). They were also very mannerly and gracious to their fellow debaters and the dialogue flowed in a pleasing manner.
There are too many names to mention but of special note was Turbo, who showed all the makings of a top-notch lawyer! Miranda and Constance reflected valuable discussion skills and came well prepared; Momo presented well and had many important points to make; Leo Jin and Ethan Ding displayed innovative thinking; Jorja Miller spoke with confidence and was fully engaged with the topic materials. These are just a few of the many outstanding contributors in Grade 9. BASIS Guangzhou is lucky to have such an excellent cadre of students!
The discussions were a great success and I look forward to more in the future.
