Rebecca Curtin

Pathway To Best Fit Universities With All The Support Of Dehong
During the Chinese New Year season, families come together and everyone is busy with the traditions of saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming in the new, wishing for a prosperous future. At this joyous time, Dehong’s graduating students also brought good news.
Up to now, we have received more than 10 offers from several countries with different majors, including prestigious universities such as University of Oxford (Economics & Management), University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester in the UK; Parsons School of Design at The New School, Savannah College of Art and Design in the USA; the University of Melbourne in Australia and York University in Canada.
Our students do not limit themselves to popular study abroad destinations and majors during their university application process. Furthermore, majors are chosen based on personal interest resulting in a more rational and diverse selection of choices.
Growth of children is definitely not an overnight achievement. It requires the involvement of school, family, and society, with students' continuous exploration, accumulation, and planning. In order to help students with their applications to universities, we provide professional university and careers counselling for each student in a group and on an individual basis from Middle School. We aim to help students build a solid foundation, set phased goals, get a clear perspective of their interests and hobbies as early as possible, and find the pathway to their future.
Ms. Rebecca Curtin, Deputy Head of Secondary School & IB Coordinator:
"If students can identify their targets, learn to set goals and make their own decisions, they will develop the personalised and intrinsic motivation that is essential to being successful and well through their high school years."
Key Themes For Different Stages
Before Grade 10: Exploration
We offer a comprehensive variety of events and lectures on higher education and careers to broaden students' knowledge, help them discover their own interests, and learn related information needed to prepare before applying to universities. The teachers will encourage students to actively explore unknown career fields and stimulate their potential; at the same time, they will lead students to continuously improve their academic skills and other related skills including organisation skills, communication skills, leadership skills, and self-management skills.
Grade 10: Transformation
As a critical period of transition, students need to gradually establish their own career goals based on accumulation and exploration. They should clarify their future direction and deepen their fields of study. In this way, they can make informed and strategic choices for subjects in high school and get fully prepared for further studies.
Grade 11: Preparation
It is a vital time in the whole process. Students will be focused on exploring and studying in the field that they are interested in, while also studying for any additional requirements such as English language examinations. Moreover, they need to prepare for the written examinations and interviews for university applications in advance. We will help students confirm the majors and universities they intend to apply for and provide individualised guidance to help increase their competitiveness.
G12: Application
This is the time to submit university applications. There will be different requirements for different universities in different areas, and our teachers will help students develop personalized and appropriate study and activity plans based on their grades, personalities, interests, and directions of study.
Our Resources And Support
University and Careers Counselling
At Dehong, we will provide our students with various kinds of university and careers counselling services. Students can seek support and help according to their needs.
Structured Lessons:We share with students the differences between regions when applying for universities, how to browse university websites and extract key information, and how to write impressive personal statements.
One-On-One Meeting:Through one-on-one meetings, we help students analyse different majors and universities that they are interested in, make recommendations, and answer queries.
Michael W. (Grade 12):
“Every week, we will have one-on-one meeting to discuss regarding my applications. Teachers will recommend related programmes and useful online lectures for the majors that I am interested in. And they will help me to scrutinize and polish the application materials.”
Sean X. (Grade 11):
"Our teachers have led us to explore the subjects for high school and majors that we are interested in. At first, I struggled to figure out the majors I preferred, but now, with the help of our teachers, I have a clear path forward."
Group Activities:Each student participates in group discussion regarding higher education. They can study the fields they are interested in, and share information and experiences with each other in a collaborative and cooperative atmosphere.
Diversified Events:Students participate in diversified events such as career days, alumni talks, university talks, and university fairs.
Structured
Lessons
Joy S. (Grade 12):
"I have decided to go further study in architectural design when I was in Grade 11. In addition to the help of the counselor, our subject teachers also provides us with suggestions to help us create a better portfolio. At the same time, the school arranged a variety of activities and events, giving us the opportunity to communicate with the admissions officers from universities, and participate in the online lectures of different universities."
Network Resources
Our counsellors also work with professional advisors and related platforms. Sister Schools also share experience, resources and success cases with us. As a long-term member of College Board (SAT, AP) and National Association for College Admission Counseling, our students can obtain the latest information regarding examinations and applications.
Efforts Of Students, Parents And The School
Cultivating Students' Self-motivation
In addition to daily classes, we encourage students to accumulate confidence and awareness through extensive reading and research, and, according to the students' interests, participate in a wide range of experiences including relevant enrichment classes, summer schools, community service, and internship opportunitiesto boost their knowledge in their professional fields outside the classroom. These experiences help enhance students’ learning ability and lay a solid foundation for future studies.
There will be additional requirements when applying for some majors, such as visual arts and performing arts, so students will need to set aside sufficient time to prepare their portfolios. Another example is for medical science, where students may undertake related internship experiences and take part in special entrance examinations in advance of their applications. We will work closely with students for individual plans.
Alston M. (Grade 10):
"Outside of school, I have been involved in some performing art activities such as concerts, where I can further develop my interests and professional skills. These experiences bring me unexpected beneficial results when trying new and unfamiliar things out."
Penny S. (Grade10):
"I am interested in biology, so I completed an additional online course in animal behaviour organised by a university. As well as gaining more specialised knowledge, the experience has also improved my learning skills. In my spare time, I also work as a volunteer at the Jing'an District Library, which helps me improve my communication skills."
Family-School Interaction
We often hold parent workshops to help families understand higher education. In addition, teachers will often hold collaborative meetings with parents and students. Parents are the ones who know the most about their child's characteristics, personality, strengths, and weaknesses, and with their insight teachers could learn more detailed information about each student. In this way, all of us cooperate to help students on their journey toward university and careers in the future.
Ms. Hong Cai, University and Career Counsellor:
"Children's potential and possibilities will be reflected through their connection with life and the world outside. We will pay attention to every step of the student's path and give guidance according to the possibilities and potential they show. And remember, it takes a long time to prepare for applications and students should let the universities they are applying for understand them deeply in all aspects."
We are dedicated to tailoring university and career counselling according to individual students' strengths and goals. Throughout the process, teachers will help students understand a range of topics including education systems, application requirements, examination preparation, majors, admission processes, scholarships, and career directions, so that students can find the "best fit" for themselves for their university and career.
We will keep you updated regarding offer list for the class of 2023 shortly.
