Editor's foreword: Vivian is a student who has scored 593.5 points in the high school entrance examination and 146.5 points in English single subject. She is also the first student to obtain dual student status after the BC course of Xiehe Education is included in 21 schools. As the first student to "eat crabs", we conducted follow-up interviews to see how she has adapted. Her parents finally chose Xiehe Education to study the BC course. I once asked their parents, why did you make such a choice? Her mother replied: My child is a very self-aspiring child. She herself said that I want to choose international courses. I want to use my own efforts to tell the previous teacher that the children in the international course are also excellent. Facts have proved that Vivian has adapted well in the BC course of Xiehe Education and is gradually approaching her dream.
For Chinese students, studying in local schools and taking high school and college entrance exams is the best way for most of them to get into university. However, some students chose another route, they come to the international school with Chinese student status and prepared to apply for universities abroad.
Xu Weilian from 11C originally studied in well-known primary and junior high school in Shanghai. When she was in her middle school, her grades have always been in the top ten of the class, and she has always been in the top one of the class in primary school. When this’s time to chose for school, she chose Jiaoke immediately. The reason why she chose the International school in the grade 10 is that in the third year of junior high school, what she did was to study day by day which made her life became very boring. She didn't have time and space to do what she liked. She didn't even have time to continue the dance she learned from primary school. Thinking of going through this kind of again in senior three, I decided to change my learning environment at that time.
She said: my parents are very supportive. Originally, she decided to go to study abroad for postgraduate, but now she just advance the plan.
I believe that everyone will not adapt to the situation when he/she has just entered an international school from a familiar local school. In this regard, she said: "after entering the BC department, it was really not suitable, because most of the time in the school within the system, the students listen to the teacher's lectures, and the knowledge is basically instilled into you by the teacher, but BC pursues more autonomous learning, there are many group projects, and the way of communication has changed from Chinese to English." Although she mentioned that her ability to adapt to the new environment is not so fast, she took about one month to fully adapt. “It is nine years of compulsory education that has laid a good foundation for me.” She said.
As a former student in local middle school, Xu Wei Lian (Vivian Xu) spoke about the differences she felt between local school and the international high school."I have more time to try what I like and there are more choices in the BC curriculum." She said, "Under Chinese exam-oriented education, the standard for all students are the same. There are more than a dozen courses, none of which can be abandoned The BC program tends to develop each student's strengths. Our students can choose from a wide range of subjects, including arts, science, engineering, commerce, art and medicine. Each major has its own curriculum, which is more conducive to highlighting the key points and saving time to cultivate our own interests. Also, the BC curriculum is a little more practical than the exam-based education. BC courses will be more scientific and humanized."
"The experience of the Zhong Kao has benefited me a lot." she says." I think that studying in the local school would really help a lot in terms of study habits.” she said, “Just like taking notes. In fact, teachers at international schools don't deliberately write boards or ask us to always take notes. In many cases, it is up to you to organise and summarise your knowledge. However, in junior high school, the teacher of each subject will emphasize the important points and tell us what needed to be taken in the notes. Another thing is the management of time. Basically, assignments were due the next day. But at BC International, there is a longer time between assignment and submission, from a week to two weeks, to two or three days. Basically I haven't had any late assignments, and that's because I'm able to organise how much I should finish each day, so I don't say I'm in a rush to get the assignment in before the submission deadline.
When asked about those students who had the idea of moving from the local Chinese institutional teaching system to an international education system, she expressed her support and gave valuable advice.
"Well," she nodded, "I am certainly very supportive of those students who have the intention of moving from local schools to international high schools. My advice to them is to live within their means and to be self-disciplined, I guess. In fact, I think that if you want to enter the school through the secondary school examinations, you should first of all get a score above the district key mark. This will at least show that your grades are not particularly bad and that you are capable of studying at BC. In the BC programme, students may find that they can apply to some of the better universities abroad, such as the University of Toronto or UBC, which may require you to add AP courses to the BC programme, which might be benefit both for university applications and for future study in university. Another thing is that students who still have Chinese schooling are required to take the HKCEE, which means that you will have to take the HKCEE as well as the AP courses while completing the 6 BC academic courses. You may not find yourself with that much time, so you must be very self-motivated and self-disciplined to be able to navigate the three tracks of study."
