Mr. PJ, our MYP Design teacher, is an experienced IB educator who started out as a Senior Training Analyst for Dell Computers prior to teaching. In this article, he shares how design classes enable students to make their innovative ideas come to life.

PYP ICT, MYP Design
上网课不代表教学课程减少了。在东华文泽学校的中学生们不得不适应在家学习,而这正是很好的时机因为设计课的单元学习正好专注于数码设计。利用学校为每位学生配套的MacBook Pros,他们可以使用在云端的Microsoft服务在线完成设计课里的所有功课,包括制作和提交他们的作品。而学校随时候命的IT专员,亦为学生和家长们提供了培训,让他们学会如何使用我们在线上课堂所用到的各种电脑科技。
Going online doesn’t mean doing less. In Tungwah Wenzel International School, the middle school students had to adapt to home learning and it was good timing that our units are focused on Digital Design. Using their MacBook Pros, our students do all online tasks in Design with the use of Cloud-based Microsoft services to produce and submit their work online. Together with our on-call IT experts, students and parents were given training on how to use different technologies we use in our Virtual School.
设计课不仅仅是大家想象中的一门IT课。它涉及很多思考、创造力、冒险精神,还需要遵循设计循环的流程。他们学会的技能不仅在课堂上,也能在其他层面上学以致用。设计课是不同的生活技能的应用和实践,从高中到大学毕业,这些技能可以终身受用,有助他们在职业生涯中取得成功。此外,学生也可以把这些设计和创新的技能应用在之后一个为期一年的MYP中学项目报告中。
Design is not just a normal IT subject as one might imagine. It involves a lot of thinking, creativity, risk-taking and the will to follow the Design Cycle. The skills that they learn are all very useful not just to the subject itself but for other disciplines as well. Design is the application of different life skills which are very practical and can be used in high school to finishing university so they can be successful in their careers in the long run. Furthermore, the students will use these design and innovation skills when they propose and create their year-long projects as their culmination of learning in the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

MYP Design has three areas namely Product Design, Digital Design and Food Design. TWIS has the facilities and resources to run all three of them. Watch for our next lessons! We will have robotics, international cuisine, and other challenging yet engaging activities for them until the end of the year.

In Grade 6, the students have been learning how to make 2D games using Scratch 3. Here they are learning programming skills that can be developed into more serious programming lessons later on. So far, they have developed Arkanoid games, Flappy bird games, and even researched some games to try. At the moment, they are developing their ideas on how to make their own games. The students are using their creative thinking skills and being risk-takers in this task.

Students are learning how to make the interior of the house by making the walls first.
In Grade 7, the class has been learning how to make a 3D house using Sketchup. They have learned how to use different tools as well as how to design interior and exteriors of different houses. They have finished creating feasible ideas of the house they want to make in this current project. At this time, they are finalizing their design, incorporating the ideas gleaned from the survey they had conducted, as well as the analysis of their own work.

我们八年级的学生正在做3D打印设计。由于学校拥有3D打印技术,学生们正在学习如何制作各样不同功能的3D办公室用品。他们已经学会了创作iPhone和apple手表的底座,上面还有笔筒、充满创意的马克笔筒和其他小物件。他们一直都很享受整个设计过程,也很热衷于设计他们拟议的产品,期待着这些产品可以批量生产,并提供给我们的老师或是所需的家人。
Our 8th graders are doing a 3D print design. Since the school has the technology for 3D printing, the students are currently learning how to make 3D office peripherals which can have many different features. So far, they have created iPhone and apple watch docks with pen holders, creative marker holders, and other small items. They have been enjoying the activities and are eager to start designing their proposed product which can be mass-produced and be given to our teachers or their family members who need them.
对我们的设计课学生来说,这段时间虽然忙碌但却获益良多。受到疫情爆发的限制,他们可能只可以驻足在家,但我可以肯定他们的创造力并没有被限制,并在设计课里发挥着天马行空的想象力。
It has been a busy and productive period for our design students. Their mobility might have been limited by the outbreak but certainly not their ability to create and unleash their imagination in our design classes.
