Welcome to another edition of the RDF Weekly.

Once again, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to another edition of RDF Weekly #5. As the end of the academic year quickly approaches us, and students have finally settled completely into campus we are now focusing on the final preparation for AP exams. This Wednesday we have offered a complete second day for students to participate in Mock AP Exams, the first was last week. Hundreds of Exams were sat, and we have noticed wide interest in these practice exams. This is a tradition we plan to keep going in the future and are very sure that in sitting these practice exams that students are gaining valuable insights as per what will come in the following weeks when they sit the official AP Exams.

With that said, I myself, and all of RDF would like to extend our best wishes to all students who will go sit these exams. You still have some time remaining so please use this time wisely. Space your study, do well in advance, master the concepts and avoid last minute cramming. The aim of these tests is to assess your understanding and mastery of a subject, so please work in advance and demonstrate erudition. We all wish you well.

In this edition, of RDF Weekly, I feel it is special in that this newsletter is becoming more RDF community complete. In it, you will find contributions from students, the Student Government, and faculty. You, are also free to contribute.

Inclusions of submissions from students and faculty has been done for you, the reader, to experience different views and opinions from our community. These views and opinions do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of the Principal, or RDF, but they do encapsulate the spirit that we encourage difference and allow for individual expression.

Student work will be presented as it is, in the absence of translation. That decision is made due to the fact that we want to celebrate their work, in either English or Spanish, for this 5th edition of RDF Weekly. More specifically, the work they have produced is from their classwork, and these classes were conducted in English and Spanish. This is what we are showcasing.

Before I close off on this letter, I wants to once again wish our students the best in both upcoming AP Exams, and RDF finals around the corner. Work hard. Work wise. I also thank the entire RDFIS family for all of the collective cooperation we have made to return after many months away from campus and feel that education, face-to-face, is now back on track. Please remember the upcoming break from April 30 – May 4. Take Note: we return on May 5 and will hold classes from May 5 to 8 and will then resume the normal class schedule from May 9.

We have reduced class durations, on a couple of days, to accommodate for the additional days being implemented to make the experience pleasurable. We understand it is a long stretch, so want to take care of everyone’s wellbeing in order to afford for good academia to flourish.

I wish you a pleasant weekend, a productive holiday, and a happy return after the well-deserved break.

Sincerely,

Teacher Talk

Academics, Athleticism, Arts

Last weekend, at an exhibition show, downtown Shenzhen, RDFIS was being showcased for its excellence performance. I was invited to speak and share our past successes and future visions, and it was a great honor to do so. It was easy to do this – because one just needs to think of what happens in the classrooms, in the hallways, in the arts studios, on the sports fields, and within the walls of our picturesque campus; then speak. It's all excellence. It is a pleasure to work in a zone of excellence.

One member of the audience approached me after my talk. He thanked me and planned to bring his son to visit us. I spoke a bit of a book on "whole learning" which encourages educators and programs within school systems to develop the whole learner. He then, suddenly, asked me: "what are the three most important things to develop the whole learner?"

I thought, but it did not take long, and I responded: "Three As, lets make it scientific, or creative and call this A cubed."

I then discussed how a quality program should offer the three As: Academics, Athletics, and Arts, with an emphasis on the notion that none are more important, or less important, than another. An intellectually gifted individual whom lacks creativity may have value in some domains, but they will never innovate if they lack creativity. Arts education is critical to help keep creative corners of cognition evolving. Many education programs squander arts. An academic mind in an unhealthy body, or mind, is also not optimal. This is not to suggest that individuals with disabilities or challenges have no value, the do, and they have a lot to offer, but there will always be a remedial approach to help them overcome or rid these challenges to the fullest extent possible. When this is not possible, and many times this is the case, then we gladly embrace this uniqueness and transform them into personal strengths.

In retrospect we often wish we could have responded to such questions differently, but as I write this, days after the exhibition, I can say that I am very happy with A Cubed: Academics, Athletics, and Arts.

What is more satisfying to me, is when I return to the campus, walk the halls, visit classes, and listen to students – I see the crystallization of these three dimensions shaping wonderful young minds, the minds of RDF students. The model I present may not complete. The model can be built upon. The model can be debated. From an educational perspective, I think many well-trained educators, with contemporary research-based education backgrounds, would be able to provide support for this trio.

RDF meets this trio with very high standards.

Thought of the Week

A Thought by Redella 9D

Try to draw 900 square grids on a piece of paper and stick it somewhere so you can see it every day, that's how many months you may have to live in this world.

There is a story that I read from a book for children, a man with grey coloured clothes, formal hat and a pair of dark grey shoes visited a young man.

"What are you going to do next week?" asked this Mr Grey.

"I will go to work, visit my grandmother, buy my girlfriend some flowers, hang out with friends and find myself a pet."

Mr Grey took a sip of tea and showed him that 900 square grids.

"You are a time waster, gentle man. I allow you keep your time in my bank. Yes, I am a time banker. You can keep your time in there and I will return you 10 percent of them when you almost died. Well…you need to eat, sleep and work. So, from now on, you don't have to visit your grandmother or your girlfriend. Just focus on your working and you can enjoy the life when you become old."

We called this kind of person "time stealer", Mr Grey is a typically one. There is a report from the psychologist that the old man would like to take risks rather than the young at this time. Because they don't care, and they have nothing to lose.

Oscar Wilde wrote in The Picture of Dorian Grey: Don't squander the golden age of your life. If we don't notice that we all young and have millions of opportunities and energetic to finish the things that we are preparing to do. The regrets will cover you as an enormous cloth when you become old.

Carpe diem.

I recently designed a collection of formal wear, 4 suits and 12 dress shirts. I wanted to give my students a real live challenge and have them interpret the designs in ways they would style and present them. I was impressed to see their interpretation and proud to have such creative young minds work with my garments.

The above images are sample composites. A composite is more than one image, merged into one. For example, see above andthe wonderful merger of three images taken by the talented Karoswill Li of 12D. She first scouted and photographed scenes she liked with the end goal ofcombining them. Then, see above (top image), the composite above has a verywonderful artistic calling.

RDFMUN is an MUN conference founded during the ongoing pandemic.

Inspired by the example of different countries coming together to fight the global pandemic, SG Rain Wu and DSG Kevin Xu have decided to organize a platform for delegates to freely express their thoughts and facilitate critical thinking on timely topics that concern us all.

RDFMUN offers a professional, creative, and student-led working space for young scholars to come together and think meaningfully about the issues of the day. At RDFMUN, we consider our delegates’ safety and personal needs to be of the utmost importance.

Similar to past conferences in the MUN community, we strive to maintain the same high standards of professionalism, integrity, and hospitality that we have all come to expect of a MUN conference. RDFMUN is dedicated to creating a memorable experience for all who attend.

For RDFIS beginners, we will invite an experienced MUN coach and Chair from The Chinese University of Hong Kong to our campus to guide and simulate students for MUN.
