Since the 6th grade, Maxine Wang ’23 has been gracing the stage on Puxi campus with her wide range of musical talents. Next year she’s packing her saxophone and heading to Berklee College of Music. We recently sat down with her to learn more of her story.
从六年级开始，上海美国学校十二年级学生Maxine Wang便经常凭借自己的音乐天赋在浦西校区登台表演。今年秋天，她将带上自己的萨克斯管，前往伯克利音乐学院就读。最近我们采访了她，了解了更多她的成长故事。
Congratulations on your acceptance! Tell us a little more about it.

I’m going to Berklee College of Music next year. I like the diversity and teaching style that Berklee offers, so I thought it was the best fit for me. Berklee was the only college I applied to. I realized in about 9th or 10th grade that I wanted to go to Berklee, so that affected my later pathway in high school when I started choosing courses for 11th and 12th grade.
明年，我将前往伯克利音乐学院就读。我喜欢那里的多元化以及教学风格，所以我认为它是最适合我的学校。伯克利音乐学院是我申请的唯一一所高校。我大概是在九年级或十年级的时候意识到自己想去那儿读书的，因此当我开始选择十一年级和十二年级的课程时，这个想法也对我高中阶段后期的学习方向产生了影响。
What was the application process like for Berklee?
伯克利音乐学院的申请过程是什么样的？
For Berklee there’s an audition and interview that you have to do. In the application, you had to choose your primary instrument and I chose alto saxophone, so I played a classical piece on my instrument during the during the audition. And there's also other pieces to test your rhythm harmony, melody, and your overall instrument and musical skills. If any juniors or SAS students are interested in applying to Berklee they can always reach out to me.
对于伯克利音乐学院来说，学生必须参加试音和面试。在申请过程中，学生必须选择自己的主奏乐器，我选择了萨克斯风，所以在试音环节我用自己的乐器演奏了一首古典乐曲。此外，学生还需要演奏其他曲目以测试自己的节奏和谐度、旋律以及整体的乐器和音乐技巧。如果SAS十一年级或更低年级的学弟学妹们对申请伯克利音乐学院感兴趣的话，他们可以随时联系我。
Can you tell us about the moment you found out you got into Berklee?
能跟我们分享一下你发现自己被伯克利音乐学院录取的时刻吗？
I applied for Early Action, and on their website they said Early Action results will come out on January 31st. But I knew people last year that found out in December, so I was checking my email everyday in December. In the middle of December, I remember I woke up to an email from Berklee saying to check the portal to view the decision, and that’s how I found out I was accepted!
我申请的是Early Action（不具约束力的提前录取），他们网站上说结果会在1月31日公布。不过我知道去年的结果是在十二月份公布的，所以十二月的每天我都会查看自己的电子邮件。十二月中旬的时候，我记得自己醒来时就收到了伯克利音乐学院发来的一封电子邮件，提醒我前往他们的网站查看录取结果。就这样，我发现自己被录取了。
You’ve performed a lot in your time here at SAS, was there a performance that sticks out to you?
你在SAS就读期间进行了很多次表演，有没有哪一场表演让你印象特别深刻？
I would say the Puxi Arts Gala, it was a performance we had recently. It was my first time trying out music theater as well. Usually, I just play instruments or sing. But this time I got to work with a group of friends and with other band members to plan out this whole performance, the lighting, the costumes, everything. It ended up being really successful.
要说哪一场表演让我印象特别深刻的话，那就是我们最近参加的浦西校区艺术盛典。这也是我第一次尝试音乐戏剧。通常情况下，我只是演奏乐器或唱歌。但这一次，我与一群朋友以及其他乐队成员一起合作，策划了整个演出，灯光、服装等等。演出最终大获成功。
