Recently, SUIS Jiaoke Campus BC Program students Julian, Cindy and Rita won Second prize in the fifth “Talking East and West” high school-university student cultural exchange exhibition event in the international curriculum section of the high school group.
The “Talking East and West” high school-university student cultural exchange exhibition event is led by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in collaboration with the Shanghai Educational Press, the Shanghai Student Moral Education Development Centre, and the Shanghai Youth International Exchange Centre. This year’s “Talking East and West” competition added an international curriculum subgrouping to the high school group, and our school representatives achieved impressive results on their very first participation. This particular event attracted 126 teams from across 16 districts in the city, and after three rounds of fierce competition, 33 teams remained, each gaining either the third, second, or first prize for the high school group, the high school international curriculum subgroup or the university group respectively.
This year’s achievement was even more remarkable as the competition collided head on with the chaos caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. Julian, Cindy and Rita, along with their advising teacher Mrs. Wei, decided on the topic of “The Differentia of Western and Eastern Awareness in Regards to Responsibility.”, and created the drama “The Protagonist’s Coming of Age Ceremony”. Through three rounds of elimination, consisting of script writing, live exhibition and video exhibition, our school representatives emerged victorious out of the 126 participating teams and collected second prize.

Cindy Xu: “This was my first time competing in ‘Talking East and West’, and I have gained a lot from the experience. The semifinals had the most challenging component of the entire contest, the visual and aural translation part, and we were able to pass due to the solid foundation for English accumulated during study in the BC curriculum. The 2 years of immersion in the school’s English environment aided us a lot in increasing our proficiency in expression and translation. Regretfully, our timing, and our ability to choose the most suitable language for the context, was slightly lacking. Through observing other teams I have learnt much. Mrs. Wei encourages us to continue expressing ourselves next year in the exhibition, and I too am much looking forward to it.”
Rita Huang: “I would like to thank every member of the team for their efforts and contributions, I would like to thank Mrs. Wei for her guidance and support, and I believe only when there is strong teamwork and mutual support can we gain the support and recognition of the judges. At SUIS, where one of the prominent ideologies is ‘Where East Meets West’ we have heard a lot on the matter of the cultural ‘clash and mix’ between eastern and western cultures, and this is why we chose the topic of the ‘The Differentia of Western and Eastern Awareness in Regards to Responsibility.’ From contemplation and observation in our everyday lives, as we reach our coming of age, this work shed’s new light on our duties and responsibilities, whilst also deepening our understanding of ourselves.”

Julian Gong: “During the preparation stages of this event, with splendid team spirit and active attitude, every member of the team gave it their very best, conquering many difficulties along the way. We gained lots of experience and unforgettable memories. As a member of an international curriculum, I am glad to explore the differences in eastern culture and western culture in this form. The entire process of scriptwriting and the competition as a whole has ignited our pride and confidence in our own unique culture. I wish to have more opportunities to talk about Chinese culture in the future, to spread our culture and ideology to the entire world.”

Mrs. Wei: “It is the first time that we have participated in this activity, and although the competition is new to us, the ‘Chinese and Western ideas’ is very familiar. As a Mandarin teacher in the BC program, I am very proud to see students bring what they have learned and thought in class into the creative atmosphere of the competition. I hope that students can go abroad with tolerance and respect for the differences between Chinese and Western ideas, love for traditional culture, and cultural confidence.”
