CAREER EDUCATION
SELF-DECODING

Career Day Kick Off Meeting
——Amanda Yan
The first “University Guidance Summit for International Schools" was held at NACIS last Saturday with the theme of "Integrating into the World and Lighten up the Future". We invited embassies and consulates, educational associations, representatives of various examination bureaux, more than 30 admissions officers from world-renowned universities such as Stanford University, and over 50 university guidance counsellors from international schools to attend the event. We built a communication platform for educational partners from different fields to share high-quality resources and explore the significance of career education.
On February 18, we will hold the largest parent career day at NACIS. A team of nearly 50 NACIS elite parents will form a "career mentor team" to provide students in grades 8-12 with career sharing and on-site mock interviews from 16 fields through sharing their first-hand work experience. The blueprint for NACIS career education is slowly unfolding through close cooperation between home and school.

CAREER EDUCATION
SELF-DECODING
A follow-up study by Harvard University shows that young people with a clear career plan and similar objective conditions such as intelligence, education, environment, etc. almost all become successful people from all walks of life after 25 years, while people who lack goals and plans have unsatisfactory life.
People who have a clear mind know what they want no matter how the external world changes.
Grade 9 and 10 students face many life issues that are closely related to their future development including IB course selection, university major selection, further education and career planning. However, future planning is closely related to every student. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to design some activities for them to experience the future workplace and various occupational attributes. Entering a higher school only opens the door for students to face the world, while career education can enlighten life.
How to help secondary students to plan well for future is the top issue at NACIS. Students are expected to plan ahead on major and career and achieve a clear self-awareness in order to better control life.
Our career education starts from Grade 8 from the Kuder professional ability test to the one-on-one career planning meeting, and then to the university guidance summit and workshops. NACIS Shanghai aims to focus on the future of every child with professional resource.
At the summit, parents received a lot of valuable information on further education, so that they could plan ahead for children’s future based on learning about the basic process of further education and concerns of foreign universities. It’s mentioned that university education is a selection process of "knowing oneself and each other". Parents were also provided with a learning platform to "know oneself and each other". Thank you to NACIS Shanghai for organising the event and for the invitation!
—Cai (G9)’s parent
On summit, what we found particularly rewarding was the speech on career education and guidance by Ms. Vivian, one of our university guidance counsellor. She particularly emphasized that students were expected to become their own life planners! In the past, our understanding of further education guidance was relatively one-sided. We thought that it was more beneficial to focus on students' advantages. However, Ms. Vivian said that our school combines career planning and Further Education guidance. Secondary students participate in career orientation tests and career demonstrations and experience activities at an early stage. With the help of professional institutions and parent mentors, students can discover their potential and interests as soon as possible. Based on intensive drive, they can manage learning and practice during the IB stage. Guiding students to become their own career planners will allow them to be admitted to their ideal university and it will also inspire them to control their own future, which should be a lifelong benefit.
-G2 and G6 Students’ parents
Starting from this year, we have introduced a more scientific and objective tool to evaluate students' future career intention. Through the professional Kuder vocational ability test, we conduct multi-dimensional evaluation and prediction of students' ability, personality and characteristic areas from six aspects. It is not only beneficial for students to avoid the blindness of future studies and career selection, but also conducive to the formation of personal career intentions.
Kuder Assessment Sample
At the same time, every secondary form tutor and subject teacher will participate in career education training, so as to provide more professional career guidance for students. After the completion of the test, the secondary teachers will conduct a one-on-one career analysis report interpretation with every student in their class to help students better self-decode themselves. What do I like and what would I like to do? What should I do now? We believe that every student can identify their own blueprint for the future after the test and be able to report their interpretation of the findings to their families.
At NACIS Shanghai, Career education is not only a single-person assignment for university guidance mentors, but also a life-long task for teachers and students to participate in and grow together.
As a parent, I feel that the school has done a very good job in providing guidance for Further Education. First of all, the school conducts continuous tests on the characteristics of students through CAT4 and Kuder, so that students and parents understand the characteristics of students and prepare well for course selection. Secondly, the school provides students with personalised learning opportunities, such as More-Able program. Thirdly, the school has also appointed mentors for students. Ms. Pi, my daughter’s tutor, is very good. She inspires students to learn chemistry with wisdom and methods.

In February, we will also hold the largest career day in the history of NACIS. Nearly 50 NACIS elite parents from all walks of life will form a "career mentor team" to share their first-hand experience and provide guidance for students in grades 8-12 on the future career paths.
Parents' workplace experience is not only a valuable asset to NACIS Shanghai, but also an important part of NACIS's career education.
The first group of mentors come from 16 industries including machinery manufacturing, artificial intelligence, media, law, investment banking, education, finance, etc. They will share their career experiences and achievements. For students who are in the critical period their education, they will have a clearer understanding of their career planning; for students who are slightly younger, the conversation with a parent will inspire their passion for discovering their potential.
Career Day Kick Off Meeting
Many students do not have a clear plan for themselves because of their lack of understanding of the adult world. Career Day is a great opportunity to show students the adult world and bridge the gap between children and adults. Children will step to a better future through understanding, choosing, setting goals, and working hard for goals.
—Ms. Ruan, the career day guest
As higher education counsellors, we will provide the best resources and the most suitable teachers for students, but we will not make decisions for students. We focus on the process of making choices, and cultivating students' thinking skills and confidence.
——Amanda Yan, Regional Head of Career Education & College Counselling, China Bilingual
"We need to let students know what we are actually doing."
The words from the career day warm-up workshop have just revealed the original intention of holding career day. Only when children have a clearer understanding of their future career choices, they will work harder in the current learning stage and have more possibilities than others.
