HOS Letter
Dear BASIS International School Parents and Guardians,
What a pleasure to welcome our students back to school after a long and relaxing holiday. In the short time we were gone, it seems like all of our students have grown a few inches either in height or hair, and everyone seems ready (standing taller and stronger) to make the most of 2022.
I know we all also have our eye on the Chinese New Year, which is a hop skip and a jump away, but in the spirit of new year's resolutions, I appreciate taking this moment to set intentions for the coming year and reflect on the year that has passed. Thank you for the support you have provided and continue to provide your students and the school. I know that transitions in leadership can be difficult, and I appreciate that these transitions are even more difficult when in-person events and school visits are restricted. I hope that in 2022, we continue to have more opportunities to meet, greet, and get to know one another and exchange ideas about our shared passion: your child and their education.
In 2021, your students won my heart and made BASIS International School Guangzhou my home. In 2022, I hope to grow our bonds as a community of adults who work to create the best possible future for our children.
Happy New Year!

BASIS International School Guangzhou boarding department and prefects ended 2021 on a high note with our annual BASIS International School Guangzhou Idol flagship event, fostering school spirit and showcasing the immense talent at our school.
On Wednesday 16 December, performers lit up the stage with 15 amazing performances, comprising of song, dance and musical ensemble. What made BASIS International School Guangzhou Idol stand out from any other event, was the fact that students got the chance to vote for their favorite performance. Prefects designed it this way to give students a voice as they helped magnify school spirit.
The event was closely contested with grade 9, Jenny Jeon coming in 3rd place, The visionary ‘K-Pop’ inspired dancers came in second place and Howard Ai won the competition as he lit up the stage with a revolutionary street dance, winning an amazing Massage gun for his efforts.
最终,九年级Jenny Jeon凭借一首《She Used to be Mine》荣获季军。
On behalf of the boarding department and prefect body we would like to thank all those who contributed to making this event a success and we look forward to continuing this BIGZ tradition.
Career Day
Ms. Echo Yu
Translated by Mr. Min Yu
Primary school was able to host our first Career Day on December 1st and it was a huge success! A career day is an activity in which parents/guest speakers from a variety of companies come together at our school to share information about their workplace, their job, and the education and skills that are required for success in their career.
16 outstanding parents/guest speakers from various career fields participated the event. We have lawyer, engineer, scientist, professor, financial managers, architect, police officer from customs, business owners, and last but at least, Ms. Bella from our school canteen, Mr. Chan from our operation team, and Dr. Smeltzer, our Head of School!
The students are exposed to a variety of careers in order to jump start their thinking about the future. By preparing early, they are now more likely to be college and career ready after high school graduation. All students in grades 1-5 participated in Career Day and they really enjoy the conversations with our ‘big friends’ and can’t stop asking questions!
A big round of applause to all of our guest speakers. All of their speeches are well prepared and skillfully delivered. Our kids enjoy their sharing so much and some of them even wouldn’t let them leave the classroom!
Thank you again for coming to our school and making the day a special one for our kids! Hope more of parents will participate in the future event!
Boarding Open Day
Mr. Gyendra Sooriah
Translated by Mr. Sherry Shu
As part of an initiative to actively create awareness and constantly improve pastoral relations between the boarding house, school and parents, the boarding department hosted an open house on the 30th of November.
The open house gave parents a deeper insight into the holistic features of the BIGZ boarding program by allowing parents to see how boarding students live their day to day lives. It gave a comprehensive account of the daily routine, support structures and activities that we offer.
Parents were able to experience the life of a boarding student as they walked through the Evening Study Session program that is designed at providing hybrid academic support, whereby 8-10 subject-specific teachers provide academic support on daily basis coupled with our prefect mentoring system.
Parents were then shown some of the boarding activities such as cooking club, basketball, soccer and table tennis, which enhances the holistic development that the boarding house strives to provide. Thereafter parents were taken into the dormitory where they could see how students live and interact with their peers on a daily basis.
The open house allows us to understand parental concerns and enables us to work together to provide a safe harmonious and optimal living environment for our students. We look forward to hosting more of these in the future as we take sides to strengthen pastoral relations between parents, school and the boarding house.
Business elective’s project
Ms. Shilpa Baweja
Translated by Mr. James Zhong
The Business elective’s project-based learning approach has allowed students to explore and unify their imagination, creativity, and desires to comprehend business concepts and understand what goes into business planning. They worked hard and made a business plan about a café station at school. They requested the audience of several experts to get input, feedback, support and understanding on the possibility of creating a unique collaboration between school and students.
In the next phase of this project, the students plan to work closely with the school’s operations and purchasing team, as suggested by Dr. Erica Smeltzer and Ms. Margaret Ma. In the words of William Zhang, “we’re looking forward to working with our school experts to identify the ideal and best place for our café station and to do accurate financial calculations within T1.” Again, the plan is to present the case to the school management for financial approval and construction support in T2. Ruiya Kuang says, “I know it is much more than a place that’ll be convenient; we have to look for a water source, set up possibilities and many other resources, as suggested by Dr. Smeltzer.” Grace Wong realizes that “it might end up being a big investment for the school, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.” Kevin Xiao and Grace Shen are very excited to see this café test operating by T3 and are already dreaming about the experience it’ll provide them.
Their idea is straightforward yet unique. Setting up a café station offering high-quality snacks and drinks made using fresh and healthy ingredients could be their place to chill, relax and relish healthy snacks and beverages and feel rejuvenated. They plan to incorporate cakes and cookies freshly baked by the school’s baking club once a week, a proposal that Dr. Smeltzer particularly liked. Having healthy snacks such as smoothies, juices, milkshakes etc., in a café set up as a collaborative project would be an exciting and truly remarkable and unique experience for our students. The Logistics Team will fully support the early validation and feasibility study of the project.
