What come into your mind when you hear ‘teachers’ professional development’? "Another meeting?" "Why so many lesson observations?" "I listened, then what?" ...... Perhaps there is a way to turn 'passive' teacher growth into 'active', and turn 'active' into 'action'? That's why we start CBS TALK. By inviting teachers to give talks, workshops and book sharing sessions, CBS TALK brings together the experiences and wisdom of our teachers in their teaching practice, thus giving them the impetus to grow professionally as well as to solve education problems and build a learning community.

CBS Talk
The Concept-based Teaching Design
On 6 April, Ms Delia WANG from MYP presented a long-awaited teachers' workshop on Big Ideas. In the current wave of education reform, big idea-based teaching provides teachers with a pathway to design teaching and learning that will develop students' transferability and creative thinking.
The big ideas are the most essential and valuable core content in the subjects, which will become the basic strategies and methods for students to solve problems. There is a contradiction between limited class time and requirement for increasing knowledge, and the way to cope with it is to take the most core and valuable big ideas as the master, abandon the fragmented knowledge learning, and seize the key points, thus structuring the course content. The big ideas allow teachers to teach less and students to learn more. The big ideas reveal the laws behind the knowledge, thus linking the fragmented knowledge and facilitating the learning of new knowledge on the basis of old knowledge, which can be transferred and applied when students encounter new situations and problems, so as to cultivate students' core literacy for the subject learning.
The teachers are sharing their views about the importance of big idea-based teaching
Voices of Audiences
It was a feast for the mind. Delia combined Chinese and foreign literature, national standards and various subjects in her lectures gave us a deep understanding of the big ideas. It also led to an exploration of similar concepts such as deep thinking, ATL, project-based learning, interdisciplinary learning and other analogies. All teachers benefit from this workshop and will look back on it with great interest. We look forward to another one.
Thanks, Delia, I have a better understanding of the design of teaching based on big ideas. This talk has helped me to find out the difference and connection between big ideas and concepts that I usually understand, and to integrate the knowledge more effectively in the future lessons.
