Sean

Sean

James

James

Kevin

Kevin

Alice

Alice

Hi! Meet Our New Secondary Head Students!

We honoured the service of last year’s Head Students and welcomed our new Head Students for 2023. Looking back to last year, our Secondary Head Students Dora Y., Elaina P., Sean X., and Andrew F. served as exemplary role models for their peers and embodied the core values of our school (The new student council of 2022).

Ms. Rebecca Curtin

Deputy Head of Secondary School & IB Coordinator

"Our Student Leadership Programme empowers students to become agents of change and fosters a sense of responsibility, accountability, and service towards their community. Through Student Leadership, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, which are essential for their personal growth and success in the future. This not only prepares students for future leadership roles, but also encourages them to be active participants in shaping the future, creating a positive impact on society, and leaving a lasting legacy."

This year, we received many exceptional applications for Student Leadership and were impressed by the care, compassion, commitment and vision that all applicants expressed in their application packages. Appointed as Head Students for 2023 are: Sean X. (Student Voice), James Y. (Global Citizenship), Kevin Y. (Community), and Alice L. (Wellbeing). They are overseeing the actions of our talented our Student Council members across several departments, aiming to bring diversity and vitality to our campus.

Head Student for

Student Voice:

Sean X.

Sean

"I care a lot about what students think and how we act in our school or community. Our initiatives will encourage more students to express their voices in the community, not just on academic topics, but also to focus on students’ needs in different areas.

Showing leadership inspires everyone to commit to a common goal. As a leader, it is vital that you do as you say, and act the way you have promised because the spotlight is always on you and you should take responsibility for your words and actions. Being a leader also means that you are constantly hearing and looking for new ideas or suggestions that may improve the project or the things you have worked on, even if those ideas might be against your own. Therefore, a leader should also be open-minded and reflective. A leader should be a spiritual figure and someone that can guide and inspire others to act similarly with passion and love."

Mr. Rezart Lico, IBDP Mathematics & Physics Teacher, "Sean is an amazing communicator and has a special ability to connect with everyone. He does everything with a smile. I am confident that he is the right person for the role to represent the Student Voice portfolio."

Student Voice has been providing a platform for students to share their voice and collects opinions and suggestions from students in various ways. For example, they delivered a questionnaire to collect students' satisfaction regarding study and life. According to the feedback, they plan to enable Secondary Students to choose what they would like to eat two weeks in advance and then they will negotiate with school canteen to bring a better dining experience. Sean and his team are also planning to build a platform for students, where students can find like-minded peers across grade levels or team up for competitions easily. In addition, Sean's team also focuses on communications between students, teachers and parents and they are planning activities such as parent workshops and student information sessions, including welcoming Grade 5 students to Secondary school, to facilitate information sharing through a diverse range of activities.

Head Student for

Global Citizenship:

James Y.

James

"Global citizenship is about how decisions from everybody on Earth, as part of the one planet, can affect people living in different areas. I want to cultivate a student community that sees itself as change-makers. As a global citizen, you need to be bold to make changes and be confident to demonstrate your inspiration. Other key goals include fostering conscientious to live a sustainable lifestyle and investigating global issues and the way they connect to local challenges in Shanghai.

Leadership is the ability to inspire and manage a team to achieve a goal or outcome. Leadership and helping others helps me form my own personal characteristics. For instance, leading group work helps to grow my confidence in my capacities, communication skills and management capacity."

Ms. Shereen Tucker, Global Perspectives and IBDP Geography & ESS Teacher, "James is a very focused student, with great ideas and a drive to make change. James will lead with a global mindset and strong sense of how to involve Dehong in solving global issues."

To address the issue of excessive food waste, James, who has an aptitude for science subjects, came up with the idea of visualising the wasted food data so that students can see directly how much food has been wasted and raise their awareness of food conservation. Secondly, James and the Global Citizenship department is also exploring how to dispose of food waste, perhaps by transporting the food waste to the farm to be used as fertilizer, thus creating a cycle and practicing sustainable development.

In order to develop global citizen mindsets among Secondary students, James and the Global Citizenship department are planning activities to promote organic food, through workshop and student farming activities, so that more students can learn about organic and sustainable farming. Moreover, James will lead his team to hold seminars on some of the contemporary global issues, where teachers and students can share their experiences and insights on these topics, and also conduct research on topics that can be expanded into subject activities.

Head Student for

Community:

Kevin Y.

Kevin

"I believe the connection between students is the most important part of the Dehong community. It is important to grow a strong connection between students in different grades because the experience of students from higher grades can be a valuable reference for students from lower grades. The House system is also an ideal way for the Student Council to set connections and interactions between students apart from their class groups in the Dehong community.

My personal definition of leadership is the responsibility to connect the ideas and thoughts of every member of a group and be in charge of the program from a wider point of view. Therefore, I don't think the ability of the leader has to be better than anyone else on the team in every perspective. The leader has to be really passionate and create a positive atmosphere that infects other members of the team and influences the productivity of the team. A leader should observe the performance of each member of the group and be sensitive in sympathizing with others' feelings and taking care of others' emotions and feelings."

Mr. Rezart Lico, IBDP Mathematics & Physics Teacher, "Kevin is a great listener and has the ability to show compassion to the people he is conversing with. I am confident that he has what it takes to be a servant leader as he tries to bring change into our community of students. "

Kevin has been considering ways to support the growing strength of Student-led Qidi Clubs based on his past experiences working at the Student Council, as many new clubs are being created every academic year. Therefore, this year he plans to lead his team to look into possible solutions to support the sustainable development of student clubs, such as designing an information system where all Student-led Clubs can register their information and feedback for future use by new club leaders. In addition to this, with on-campus life back in full swing, Kevin is also looking forward toorganising more House events to facilitate the interaction between students from different grades and cultivating a strong sense of community.

Head Student for

Wellbeing:

Alice L.

Alice

"In my mind, wellbeing has always been the best foundation for accomplishing tasks. Wellbeing includes good physical fitness and good mental health. I want to use my strength and enthusiasm to bring people together and show empathy towards each other. If I succeed, my first step is to use the large terrace outside the cafeteria as an area for socialization. This is a place where people could gather in the school, and it can be used as a good place for students to spend leisure time after studying. At the same time, there are also a lot of relaxing psychological lectures that can be organized there or in an empty and quiet place like the bamboo garden, helping everyone to rest, communicate, and better integrate into one big family while raising the awareness of wellbeing.

To be a very effective leader, I will need three skills: the first is to be able to communicate well, the second is to have good self-management skills, and the third is to have high leadership skills."

Ms. Anita Zhang, Chinese and IBDP TOK teacher, and G10 Form Tutor, "Alice is a kind, warm-hearted, hardworking and thoughtful student. She always cares about her peers with her warm words and takes good care of everyone’s feelings. What is more valuable is that she has a chivalrous and tender heart at a young age. She can always stand up boldly and safeguard fairness and justice. I believe she will make great achievements."

This year, Alice is leading her team to promote wellbeing by organising and leading several events. One event is the new club ‘Soul Relaxation Club’. Ms. Zola Wang, Secondary School Counsellor recognises the achievements of the students so far, especiialy as they “take meaningful actions to protect the physical and mental health of all Secondary students." The department is also planning new events such as the ‘Situation Puzzle’ to support students developing the communication and emotional skills to navigate their way through the challenges that teens face.

Mr. Ryan Miles, Head of Secondary School

"It’s been a great pleasure over the years to watch the student leadership of Dehong continually grow. Without a doubt, being privileged enough to watch our Middle School students grow into successful, confident, caring and well-rounded High School students is one of the highlights of my job. I’m always amazed by their level of maturity and our four new Head Students really do embody the spirit of Dehong. I wish them the best of luck in their new roles and I look forward to seeing their impact around the school.“

Student Leadership is an important part of a Dehong education, with opportunities for students in all grades to lead. These opportunities give students agency over their own learning, growth, and impact on the world. By providing opportunities for students to identify and pursue their passions, develop their voice, and take action on issues that matter to them, we cultivate a generation of self-directed, empowered leaders who are equipped to create a better future for themselves and their communities.
